Non- Chinese Speaking Children Support Measures:
Our kindergarten attaches great importance on supporting non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students. In order to support the children as they learn Chinese as a second language, our school offers a wide range of strategies to provide support. This allows the children to adapt to the local school system and integrate into society seamlessly in the future. In addition, it also helps tackle their difficulties with learning Chinese, enhances their motivation and interest in learning, and allows teachers to work with students together to resolve their needs. By doing so, we aim to allow students to not be affected by race and to have a happy and healthy school life.

Non-Chinese Speaking Support Measures/Strategies:

1. Learning support

  • Setting Up a Non-Chinese Speaking Support Team
The school has set up a team of teachers to handle various matters related to non-Chinese speaking students and their parents.

  • Individual/group Assistance to Students when Entering Class
As every child is different, their learning processes would not be the same. Hence, individual assistance is provided according to different children’s level, adaptation, and needs.

  • Filming Theme Storybook Videos
Teachers will shoot supplementary learning videos on the content of the story to help parents revisit the learning content with their children at home.

  • Reading Pen Borrowing Scheme
The school will regularly distribute two sets of reading pens to Non-Chinese Speaking Children to borrow and revise with at home. Children can revisit the pronunciation of new words through the senses of touch, sight, and hearing, so as to increase their interest in learning Chinese.

2. Inclusive Activities:

  • Random placement of Non-Chinese Speaking Students in different classes

This helps to increase opportunity for Non-Chinese Speaking Students to converse in Cantonese, so as to help them to reduce using English as a communication medium.

  • Story Parents

Regularly invite parents to school to share stories with students.

  • Featured Inclusive Activities

The school holds different activities and performances to connect Non-Chinese Speaking Students and local students through festivities such as holiday events, game days and greetings from graduate representatives to deepen the understanding of each other’s cultural characteristics.

3. Family support:

  • Document Translations

  •  Setting up Non-Chinese Speaking Groups for Parent Seminars

Non-Chinese speaking parents can gain related information and not be affected by language barriers.

  • Enquiry period for Non-Chinese Speaking Parents

This period allows teachers a clearer understanding about Non-Chinese Speaking Student’s backgrounds. It helps reduce the confusion of non-Chinese speaking parents about the school's teaching mode or Hong Kong's education system, thus providing corresponding support services for families in further need.
